How New Tariffs May Affect Flooring Prices in Cochrane
Recent news regarding trade tariffs between Canada and the United States has left many local homeowners wondering what will happen to their renovation budgets. Some headlines refer to tariffs as high as 50%, but that doesn’t mean the total cost of your flooring project will automatically increase by 50%.
The impact depends on the product, its country of origin, its customs classification, and how the manufacturer or supplier responds. Because Riverbend Interiors sources flooring from Canada, the United States, Europe, Turkey, Korea, and other markets, not every product we carry will be affected in the same way.
What Flooring Products May Be Affected?
Canada’s new counter-tariffs on selected goods originating in the United States took effect on September 8, 2026. The rates vary from 15% to 50% depending on the specific product.
The flooring industry sees these impacts differently across several key categories:
- Carpet: U.S.-made residential carpets face a 25% tariff, while select classifications may carry up to 50%.
- Luxury Vinyl & Resilient Flooring: Many U.S.-origin PVC flooring products, including vinyl composition tile (VCT), and sheet vinyl, are subject to a 50% tariff.
- Hardwood, Laminate & Ceramic Tile: Most finished hardwood, laminate, and ceramic or porcelain tile products are not directly included, though certain raw components in engineered flooring may see minor adjustments.
- Canadian & Global Brands: Products originating in Canada, Europe, or Asia carry zero counter-tariffs under these trade measures.
Tariffs Don’t Apply to Full Project Costs
This is the most important point for Riverbend Interiors Floors & Tile customers: a tariff on an affected flooring product doesn’t mean that an additional rate is added to your full invoice.
Any tariff-related increase is connected only to the cost of the affected product and doesn’t apply to:
- Professional installation and labour
- Underpad and acoustic underlayments
- Site measuring and design consultation
- Unaffected finishing trims and transitions
For example, if a particular carpet is affected, the tariff only applies to that imported material.
Will Every Manufacturer Increase Its Prices by the Same Amount?
No, not all manufacturers and suppliers are responding to tariff announcements in the same way. While some are absorbing parts of this additional cost, others are passing it through to retailers. Policies may continue to change as these trade discussions continue.
This means the effect on the final retail price could be considerably lower than the rates reported in the news. Riverbend Interiors will review the current supplier pricing rather than assuming every product has increased by the same amount.
What Happens with Existing Orders and Backordered Products?
Timing can make a big difference. U.S.-origin goods that were already in transit to Canada when the new measures took effect are excluded from counter-tariffs. However, items that are delayed or backordered, or products that haven’t entered transit yet, could be treated differently once they’ve shipped.
If an order is affected by a production delay or a tariff-related supplier change, we’ll communicate the details to you and discuss available options before moving forward with your project.
