How to Choose the Right Tiles for Your Home Refurbishment

Right Tiles for Your Home

Starting a home renovation project? That’s an exciting endeavour! Change is always thrilling, especially when it comes to home improvement. However, it can also be a bit tedious at times trying to make the right choice for the upgrades to your home. And one of the most difficult of these choices is deciding on what tiles to select for your home refurbishment.

In this article, we will cover how to choose the right tiles for your renovation, so that you can walk into your home every day feeling delight and satisfaction.

What Effect Do You Want the Tiles to Have?

What kind of feel would you like emanating from your tiles? What’s the atmosphere you’d like to create with them? Do you want a contemporary and modernized finish that shouts opulence? Or do you want something more unassuming and humble that whispers modesty? Depending on what your personal preference is, you can then decide on the details (tile colour size, shape, etc).

Selecting the Colour

Choosing the right colour is paramount. You don’t want to select a shade of tile that doesn’t blend well with the rest of the decor. This will result in an offsetting of the room that will imbalance it texturally. Instead, you want a tone that compliments your preexisting colour scheme and even accentuates it if possible.

But with that being said, don’t feel like you’re obligated to choose a pigmentation strictly based on your current colouring. There are plenty of colours that may seem incompatible at first but that can actually merge together nicely.

This is where hiring a professional will really come in handy. If you don’t have an eye for colouration and how and why certain colours blend well while others don’t — then outsource this responsibility to someone who does.

Tile Size

One of the most important components that will determine tile size is the room being tiled. For instance, in a bathroom setting, or a kitchen, or anywhere else where there is an excess of humidity and moisture, smaller mosaic tiles will be ideal. The reason being is that these areas will require moulding. Additionally, small tiles develop more distinctively when contrasting grout is utilized.

And if you’re tiling an area that’s more open and spacious, consider opting for larger tiles. Larger tiles with complementary grout create the impression that the area is bigger than it really is.

Porcelain or Ceramic Tiles

Even though there are many similarities between porcelain and ceramic tiles, they are still different. And this distinction can be found in the matter used in their production in addition to each one’s firing process.

Produced with fine white clay, porcelain tiles are heated at a much higher temperature than their ceramic counterpart. This results in porcelain being stronger and more durable. Ceramic tiles — on the other hand — are manufactured utilizing common clay to minimize the presence of water.  This makes the ceramic tile a much more economical selection for areas with minimal levels of moisture. In contrast, porcelain tiles are perfect in areas with ample amounts of moisture.

Decorated or Ordinary

This decision will be based on your own personal preference as well as what makes sense for the room being tiled. If you desire tile designs in your bathroom — then by all means — go for it! While this kind of decorated tile composition can be applied anywhere, they typically have the most distinct impact in remote parts of the home (kitchen, bathroom, etc).

Once you’ve taken these variables into account, you’ll be in a good place to make the right tile choice for your home renovation. This is certainly a decision you don’t want to rush or skimp over, as tiles play a big role in the overall presentation of your home.
